New Year Strategies: Aligning Your Team and Vision for Success

loyb podcast

Ready to start the new year with your team fully aligned and crystal clear on their role in achieving your vision?

A little clarity can go a long way in setting the stage for massive success and ensuring you have the right people doing the right things.

I have found it helpful to dive into these things at the beginning of the year:

  • Clarifying roles and responsibilities for your team
  • The power of using a theme for the year
  • Setting guiding principles that ensure results
  • Identifying areas for personal and team growth
  • How to proactively address misalignments
  • Ensuring everyone on your team is set up for success

When things aren’t quite working, we adjust strategically to lighten the load to boost effectiveness and satisfaction across the team.

We also use a powerful tool called the "Right Fit Responsibilities Evaluation" that you can also use with your team to align them to their zone of genius work.

In episode 211 of the Lean Out Your Business Podcast, I also unpack all of the things that we do to set ourselves up for success in the new year.

Start the Year With a Strategic Reset

Even if you completed your annual planning months ago, it is worth pausing at the beginning of the year to re-anchor your team.

After a holiday break, most people need a reset.

Their routines have shifted, their focus may have softened, and it is easy to launch back into work without the same clarity or connection to the bigger vision.

That is why we kicked off our year with a session focused on realignment around the following:

  • Our theme of the year

  • Our guiding principles

  • Our business, client, and personal vision

  • Our high-level goals

This creates renewed clarity, energy, and alignment before diving back into the day-to-day execution.

If you have not paused yet to reconnect with your team and your own vision, now is the perfect time.

Define Your Annual Theme and Guiding Principles

One of the most powerful ways to align your team is by defining a clear theme for the year.

At Lean Out Method and Strategic Ops Institute, we chose Integration as our theme for this year.

After a year of rapid growth and opportunity overload, we recognized the need to create space for the following:

  • Deep integration of our new offerings

  • Operational optimization

  • Incorporating client feedback meaningfully

  • Doing fewer things at an extraordinary level of excellence

Our guiding principles for the year are built around supporting our theme, and these include:

  • Extraordinary excellence

  • Exceptional quality

  • Elite client experience

  • Embodying the next-level business today

  • Ensuring every opportunity, client, and commitment is the right fit or a no-fit

  • Laser focus

  • Walking the walk by modelling what we teach

When your team knows the theme driving decisions and the principles guiding behaviours, they can move forward with more autonomy and stronger alignment.

Clarify Vision Across Three Key Facets

A complete vision is not just about where the business is heading.

It should also account for the following:

  • Business vision: Where the company is going strategically and operationally

  • Client vision: The experience, results, and relationship you want to deliver

  • Founder vision: The role you want to play in the business and how that evolves

My vision for this year includes greater founder involvement at Strategic Ops Institute, especially as we build out our certification and licensing programs.

Recognizing that a personal vision shift impacts how the business operates and how the team needs to be structured and supported is key to sustainable growth.

It is worth asking yourself:

  • What do you want your involvement to look like this year?

  • How does that impact your team and systems?

  • What needs to shift to support that evolution?

Use the Right Fit Responsibilities Evaluation

Even the most aligned vision and goals can get derailed if people are working outside their strengths.

That is why we use a tool called the Right Fit Responsibilities Evaluation at the start of every year.

It is a simple but powerful exercise that helps ensure:

  • Everyone is spending the majority of their time in their zone of genius

  • Responsibilities that do not align are flagged for future delegation or hiring

  • You proactively spot and address misalignments before they become problems

Here’s how it works:

Step 1:
Each team member lists out their core responsibilities at a macro level (not every task, but main areas of ownership).

Step 2:
They color-code each responsibility:

  • Green: Love it, strong in it, want to keep it

  • Yellow: Good at it, willing to keep for now, but would delegate if possible

  • Orange: Can do it, but do not enjoy it or excel at it, and would love to delegate

  • Blue: Not currently doing it, but would love the opportunity to start

Step 3:
You review the results together to:

  • Identify any critical gaps

  • Inform hiring and restructuring plans

  • Realign roles around strengths as much as possible

  • Surface growth opportunities for team members ready for more

The Right Fit Responsibilities Evaluation tool uncovers potential misalignments and reveals opportunities for delegation, growth, or hiring. By taking time to reassess roles each year, you empower your team to focus on what they do best while creating space to address any gaps or areas for improvement.

Position Your Team and Business for Success

Here is a quick summary of how to align your team and vision for success this year:

  • Host a vision and realignment session early in the year

  • Define a clear theme and guiding principles

  • Clarify vision across business, client, and founder facets

  • Complete the Right Fit Responsibilities Evaluation

  • Proactively adjust roles and hiring plans based on strengths and gaps

When you start the year with intention and structure, you create the foundation for more focused, scalable, and sustainable growth.

The start of the year is a powerful time to realign with your vision, refine roles, and set a clear course for success.
